WINDMILL ROW (London)
This late-Georgian house and shop is set on the corner of a parade of listed shops, where Windmill row joins a terrace of fine Georgian town houses.
The project sensitively adopts a conservation approach, retaining the domestic character of the shop. Assisted by a skilled team of joiners dismantling and re-assembling the original glazing bars, we recovered the original façade that had been lost behind a modern shop front. The original glazing bars were faithfully reproduced, and integrated with the elements of original carpentry, salvaging much of the timberwork still in sound condition. The shop and its basement space was transformed for use as a gallery for contemporary art, lit using a glazed pavement light.
The brickwork, which had been coated in many layers of white paint, was steam-cleaned and repointed in lime mortar. The bricks to the flat arches over the windows were tuck-pointed to emphasize this feature in the brickwork. The shop entrance arrangements were remodelled and enhanced, and the pavement space immediately in front of the shop serves as an informal gathering point for the gallery’s events.
