TREVOR SQUARE (London)

The refurbishment and basement extension of a Grade II listed house. Planning and Listed Building Consent was obtained to extend the original town house over three floors. The works involved two main elements: a full refurbishment of the main house, conserving the original fabric and layout dating from 1828; and a basement extension ‘submerged’ below the rear garden. A bespoke glazed screen and conservatory, formed in oak and configured around the external garden steps, connects the basement to the upper and lower ground floors.

The conservatory extends the house into the garden, dropping down to the lower ground and basement room – and providing a handrail along the external steps. It is constructed in oak with a high performance clear finish, allowing natural light and ventilation to the subterranean parts of the house. The glazed roof is dressed in traditionally detailed leadwork

In the main house, new panelled wall linings were fitted throughout the main house, containing cupboards and integrating air conditioning the main rooms, while the original house layout and fabric was safeguarded. Original floorboards were surveyed, carefully lifted, and set aside for reinstatement.
