OFFICE (Torrelodones, Madrid)
This is the private office of a naval architect consultant, constructed in the garden of his own house. The budget was low, and the overriding imperative was to be operating as soon as possible. The decision was taken to create the office with standard prefabricated modules and wrap them with a skin of plywood panels.
The foundations and services infrastructure took a couple of weeks to put in place, with the modules were delivered and installed the same day - at which point the office was operating. The marine plywood cladding, which provides vital solar screening, was applied over a lightweight steel framework - with time to allow careful workmanship in the setting out and fixing of the panels.
As the location is Madrid, the large north- and the south-facing windows are shaded from the very high attitude of the summer sun by a small projecting canopy.
