Competition - Regeneration of Citadel, Alzira (Valencia)

Alzira, an ancient town inland from Valencia, is an historic fortified site on the river Jucar.

Our proposal seeks to render what is left of the medieval city recognisable from the approach into the town. The fortifications, which follow the original meander, are reinstated, and courtyard houses densely packed against the inside of town walls. The historic street pattern is revived.

A new town square is created within the shell of the former church, and right alongside, at the former St Gregori bridge, a new cantilevered drawbridge opens to provide a window onto a hidden river.
