Mowbray Architects is a London-based practice whose work is focussed locally, though we have travelled further afield for engagements in Spain, Germany, and Italy. Our work encompasses new-build and heritage, urban and natural landscapes, collective memory and a sensitive approach to context.
We carefully detail construction to aid a building’s long term future, and eventually to acquire patination. As practitioners, we look equally to the best practice in conservation architecture as well as to contemporary building methods. Our ultimate aim is to make contemporary buildings that connect materially to their context.
We enjoy the regional characteristics that connect buildings to their setting, looking to document the familiar forms of local architectural language part of a project’s early stages; from Victorian pattern housing in London, to the Mozarabic fortified city walls of Alzira (Spain), and Ghanaian ventilated roofs. We also maintain a long-term interest in contemporary art and landscape, and encourage this to feed into our projects.
Our recently completed work includes the extensive refurbishment and extension of town houses in Kensington and Knightsbridge, integrating complex building services within very highly fitted-out homes. We take a practical and hands-on approach to matters of construction, and we collaborate with a wide range of specialists to deliver expert design services to a broad range of clients.
We take a deep interest in energy performance, especially where we are upgrading existing buildings, and where intrinsic architectural quality could be compromised - or where special care is required for the historic fabric. We take a ‘fabric first’ approach, in which the heating requirement is reduced to a minimum. Effective insulation and air-tightness are key - however, in conservation contexts ensuring that the original construction is still breathable is vital.
